Lush Lashes, the DIY Way
You standing in front of him, coyly looking up through your luxuriously long lashes with a flirtatious smile. You’re daring him to ask you out with every laugh and bat of your eyes.
But where is all this confidence coming from?
It’s impressive what a good mascara can do for you. Sadly, the whimsical scenario I’ve conjured up is not at all what my reality would be, but alas, a girl can dream!
There are some scary truths behind your store-bought mascaras that might taint this little fairy tale before it even begins though.
It’s no surprise that the number of chemicals and toxins we come in contact with has been increasing at an alarming rate over the years. It may be a little shocking to learn that many of them are present in our beauty and skin care products though.
Perhaps you’ve seen the meme depicting a girl and the 515 most common chemicals we put on our bodies.
One product specific toxic source was forgotten though; mascara.
I would guess that 99% of you have never even passed over the ingredient list of your current mascara and that even the 1% who did, didn’t understand the ingredients. Not understanding isn’t an excuse though.
Manufacturers use fancy words like Thimerosal and Merthiolate to hide the fact that their product has mercury. Mercury is often used as a preservative in your mascara because it is known to kill bacteria.
It also kills your brain cells or more accurately, affects neurological functioning over extended contact.
Brands like CoverGirl include such ingredients as aluminum powder, lecithin and propylparaben. A few fun facts about these include their links to neurotoxicity, cancer, endocrine disruption, organ and skin toxicity. Need I say more?
If all this hasn’t swayed your opinion, then you my dear, may be a lost cause. But for all you doe-eyed damsels who are ready to take charge, then this homemade mascara is just for you.
Healthy Homemade Mascara
A few simple ingredients is all you will need to get healthy, lush, flirty-worthy lashes:
- 2 teaspoons Coconut Oil or Argan Oil
- 4 teaspoons Aloe Vera Gel
- 1/2 teaspoon grated Beeswax
- 1 or 2 capsules Activated Charcoal
- clean mascara tube
Each of these items is easily found in a health food store or Amazon.com.
Step 1: In a small saucepan, stir your oil, aloe and beeswax until they are melted together.
Step 2: Break open 1 or 2 capsules of activated charcoal and add the to your mix. Stir until they are evenly blended. The darker you want your mascara, the more charcoal you add.
Step 3: Remove your mixture from heat and let it cool down a bit. Once cool, pour it into a plastic bag. By cutting a little hole in the bag you can easily funnel your mascara into the tube without causing a mess or wasting any of it.
Store-bought products sell so well because they are easy, convenient options that come in fancy packaging. Though your homemade mascara may be in a clear tube, poured from a plastic baggy and not 100% waterproof, it will do a few things the others cannot.
This formula will moisturize and darken your lashes, maintain lash separation so you don’t get nasty clumping, but best of all it’s toxin free.
To get the most of your healthy homemade mascara, throw it away every 4-6 months. If it begins to smell, toss it away sooner. Your eyes are one of your most sensitive areas so take care of them.
Here’s my little post-script exercise; I urge you to read the list of ingredients in your current mascara, google all those crazy chemical words and see what toxins you are brushing onto your lashes every day. Then share your scariest ingredient in the comment section below!
